It has become necessary to reschedule the 48th Pate Swap Meet to September 30 though October 3, 2020!

The 48th Pate Swap Meet Has Been Rescheduled to October 1 - 3, 2020

The City of Fort Worth Has Followed the CDC Recommendations for Canceling All Large Public Gatherings Occurring In the Next Eight Weeks!

With the high risk of infection from the COVID-19 pandemic and the health and safety of vendors, attendees and staff foremost in our minds, the Pate Swap Meet has postponed the upcoming 48th Pate Swap Meet. The new dates of the event will be October 1 through October 3, 2020, the same Thursday through Saturday days as always. The now-postponed dates were to have been April 30th through May 2nd.

The Texas Motor Speedway has confirmed the new dates so they are firm.

Of course, the space reservations you are currently holding for the 2020 Pate event will be fully honored for the new dates. Everyone who has paid to renew their 2019 Pate Swap Meet spaces or who have paid to purchase new spaces can have their reservations and fees rolled over to the new event dates. Alternatively, if you wish to cancel your spaces for the new dates, you will receive a full refund of all of the fees you have paid for your spaces.

An online form is provided for you below to notify us of your decision.

We share our vendors' and patrons' disappointment about how things have turned out. However, these are very unusual and risky circumstances. It is important that we help protect the health and safety of all who would attend such a large event.

Governmental Actions

The illness from the virus that has been so prominent in the news (COVID-19) is now a pandemic. A pandemic is a global outbreak of disease. Pandemics happen when a new and novel virus emerges to infect people and can spread between people sustainably. Because there is little to no pre-existing immunity against any new novel virus, it spreads worldwide. The virus that causes COVID-19 is infecting people and spreading easily from person-to-person.

To control the outbreak, governments and ordinary common sense are attempting to limit the number of people in proximate contact with each other (social distancing) in order to limit the chances of community transfer of the virus.

On Sunday, March 15, 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revised its guidance for large-scale community events like the Pate Swap Meet (file is shown below.) Their recommendation was to cancel all events occurring in the next eight weeks that will likely have more than 250 attendees. The Pate Swap Meet normally expects more than 200,000 attendees during its three-day event and its April 30th through May 2nd dates fell within this eight-week window.

Interim guidance for mass gatherings or large community events. (PDF file)

"Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States via travelers who attend these events and introduce the virus to new communities. Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and other types of assemblies."

Further reductions to the maximum number of people in gatherings have been reduced from 250 people to 50 and, in some cases, to 10 people.

The White House has suggested that the CDC recommendations be treated as if they were "regulations."

On Monday, March 16th, the City of Fort Worth and Tarrant County governments adopted the CDC's recommendations into their code and health enforcement regimes.

Rescheduling the Pate Swap Meet

Once it was certain that we needed to cancel the April 30th through May 2nd dates, we made the decision to postpone the 48th Pate Swap Meet to the Fall of 2020. Working with the Texas Motor Speedway, we immediately secured the new dates of Thursday, October 1st through Saturday, October 3rd.

On Wednesday, March 18th, Texas Motor Speedway positively confirmed the October dates, so we are now locked in. Everything will happen just as before, just on the new dates.

Protecting the Life and Health of Pate Participants

Older people and people of all ages with pre-existing and severe chronic medical conditions — like heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, for example — appear to be at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness. Many of the participants of the Pate Swap Meet fall into these higher-risk groups. It is important that we do not put at risk any of the people who might attend the swap meet as vendors, attendees and volunteers or expose their extended families who might be additionally exposed to the virus after the swap meet attendees return home.

While we in the Pate management family are saddened and disappointed for the need to postpone the April 30th through May 2nd event, the need is clear and we fully support postponing the event until the Fall.

We will endeavor to make the postponement as painless as possible for all participants.
